About
Tina Hage, born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is an artist working mainly with the medium of photography, but her practice also encompasses video and installations. In her work, she stages images that deal with social political topics. Her works are based on easily available images from the media (press). Hage restages these found images and distils from them new motifs of her own by representing every persona found in these images herself in photographic self-portraits in her studio, and then brings them together digitally to form a new work of art.
Initially, Tina Hage assumes the role of an observer. She researches journalistic images where patterns and gestures are often the focus of her interest. By choosing topics that dominate the media at certain points, and embodying them in her works, she sets in motion a channelling of events in which the beholders can participate. The incorporation of what has been seen by the artist is part of the process of understanding a “reality” that consists mainly of images, news, and framings, and thus can be experienced by many people only in a mediated way. For the recipients of the works, iconic moments of history that hitherto had only been a media ambient background noise in their consciousness become experienceable.
Tina Hage’s condensed gestures extend moments and stage the loops of history repeating itself prototypically. In her re-enactments, she deconstructs (official) narratives and frames of interpretation, renders subtexts legible, and sometimes offers new interpretations without ever becoming didactic or overbearing. In this way, Hage creates contemporary allegories of complex topics like migration, capitalism, body politics, riots, and protests, and at the same time very subtly touches on question of art and media theory.
Tina Hage lives and works in Munich. She studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne as well as at Goldsmith College (MFA 2009), London, where she lived and worked for 13 years. Her works can be found in the following public collections: Kunsthalle Göppingen, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Nottingham Castle Museum, Goldsmith University of London Collection. She has been represented by Thomas Rehbein Gallery Cologne since 2013.

Tina Hage, geboren in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, ist Künstlerin, sie arbeitet vor allem im Medium Fotografie; des Weiteren umfasst ihre Praxis Video und Installation. In ihren Werken inszeniert sie Bilder, die sich mit gesellschaftlich politischen Fragestellungen auseinandersetzen.
Ihrer Arbeit dienen allgemein verfügbare Bilder aus den Medien (Presse) als Ausgangspunkt und Inspiration. Die Einverleibung des Gesehenen durch die Künstlerin ist Teil des Verständnisprozesses einer „Realität“, die vor allem aus Bildern, Nachrichten und Framings besteht und somit für sehr viele Menschen nur mittelbar zu erfahren ist. Für die Rezipienten der Werke werden ikonische Momente der Geschichte erfahrbar, die möglicherweise bisher nur als mediales Grundrauschen im Bewusstsein waren.
Tina Hages verdichtete Gesten verlängern Momente und setzen die Endlosschleifen der sich wiederholenden Geschichte prototypisch ins Bild. In ihren Reenactments dekonstruiert sie (offizielle) Narrative und Deutungsrahmen, macht Subtexte lesbar und bietet mitunter neue Lesarten an, ohne zu belehren. Hage schafft auf diese Weise zeitgemäße Allegorien komplexer Themen wie Migration, Kapitalismus, Körperpolitik, Riots und Proteste, und berührt gleichzeitig sehr subtil auch kunst- und medientheoretische Fragen.
Tina Hage lebt und arbeitet in München. Sie studierte an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln sowie am Goldsmith College (MFA 2009), London, wo sie 13 Jahre lebte und arbeitete. Ihre Werke sind in folgenden öffentlichen Sammlungen: Kunsthalle Göppingen, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Nottingham Castle Museum, Goldsmith University of London Collection. Ihre Arbeiten werden von der Galerie Thomas Rehbein in Köln repräsentiert.
