Landscapes

The work is concerned with the study and re-viewing of my surroundings. The pieces often begins with the use of photography to document a scene or architectural construction. The images are then broken down to their elements and reconstructed again to form a new view. Each re-composition presents a ‘new landscape’ and addresses ways in which we co-exist in shared, public spaces. The installations aim to reveal new interpretations and often, overlooked aspects of an everyday place.

Installations Scene from above (2015-2026)

	Article
The series Scene from above was inspired by aerial landscape photographs. These landscapes always reveal human interventions. Often, the development of the land, viewed from a great distance, produces aesthetic patterns that became a central interest in this body of work. In 2024, I began developing the works—which initially existed as small models—into large-scale, three-dimensional installations that occupy space and fundamentally alter the mode of perception.

Scene from above (Forest) is inspired by an aerial photograph showing the Amazon rainforest, interrupted by scattered corrugated metal roofs. This image serves as the starting point for the installation, but it is not reproduced documentarily; rather, it is strongly abstracted. At the heart of the work are color and form, condensed into a spatial composition. The installation translates the photographic top-down view into a physically tangible structure. Through the abstraction of the landscape, specific locations dissolve in favor of a formal exploration. The sculptural elements create a relief-like topography that mediates between image and space.

Models Scene from above (2013/15)
The series Scene from above is presented as a collection of small-scale models (approximately A4 in size). These models incorporate photographic prints that visualize landscapes, exploring the formal aspects of photography while prompting questions about the audience's perspective.
The work is inspired by aerial photographs of developed landscapes. For example, Scene from Above (Pool) draws on aerial views of second-home resorts in southern Spain. Part of the series is the recreatin of landscapes as small-scale models, consisting of photographic prints: minimal, colorful, and partially folded prints forming a relief that visualises arial landscapes. By deconstructing found images of heavily developed areas and reconstructing them using photographic textures as sculptural objects, the work invites viewers to reconsider the formal aspects of photography while engaging with broader questions about perspective and human impact on the environment.

Scene from Above (Pool) draws specific inspiration from aerial images of southern European suburbs, where rows of red-roofed houses with pools stretch endlessly across the landscape. This serialised repetition transforms individual elements—houses, gardens, and pools—into a homogeneous system, mirroring the structures of mass production and standardisation.

The work addresses the relationship between humans and their environments, examining the systems and structures we create—whether physical or conceptual. Scene from above offering a distant, almost alien perspective of our constructed surroundings.

The pieces engage in a conversation about perspective, repetition, and the ways we shape and interpret the spaces around us.

The Place here
	ArticleSeries The Place here (2013-ongoing)
The series The Place here (2013- ongoing) consist of 11 photographic installations and a video piece and investigates the spatiotemporal distance between where and when the photograph was taken and the moment it is viewed later e.g. in a book or exhibition.

The places chosen have tended to be iconic brutalist architectural pieces from around the world. I am drawn to these kinds of structures due to their minimalist, functional yet highly creative use of a common material in concrete. These structures were often planed by architects in the 50s and 60s as places that serve the human use and create also communal places to bring people together.

In these art works I am particular interested in the shift between the medium photography, time and place. By creating these installations and video, I explore and play with the moment that the photograph has been captured and their representation in new contexts. Often the photographic print is used as material within an installation.

The video of series The Place here is 11min long and runs in a loop. The piece consist of single photographs, which were taken from a lower deck promenade called Bottle Alley in Hastings. The images document the entire walk on the promenade from start to finish. &nbsp;

The alley is 480 metre long and runs from the pier to Warrior Square. It was built as part of a revolutionary double deck promenade in the 1930‘s by the Borough Engineer Sidney Little, who became known as the ‚concrete king‘. Bottle Alley is named as such due to the countless pieces of multi-coloured glass bottles embedded in the concrete panels along the entire length of the alley.
(www.hastings.gov.uk/arts-culture/bottle/)&nbsp;The walk way was built 20 years before the term Brutalist architecture as an architectural style emerged.

The video keeps changing in pace and gives at points the impression of standing still. The pace in the video is mimicking the pace of walking down the promenade and tries to take the viewer on a journey. By taking still images of the alley its perspective changes and the architecture structure becomes visible in different ways.
The nearly hundred year old walk way was also interesting for me to document, as its appearance changed a lot from its original state. The remaining details from the past can still be discovered. I took the photographs for this work in 2015, in 2017 Bottle Alley was transformed with multi-coloured programmable lighting, replacing the old lighting and framework.

Blind Dates and Dialogues – “The Conversations” at H8H.space, Frankfurt

At least the artists were asked. After all, it doesn’t hurt to know what you're getting into when a small curatorial team invites you to a blind date. With artists, some from London, some from Frankfurt, who mostly only knew of each other by reputation before the exhibition titled “The Conversations.” It’s a rather appealing experimental setup, one might say — and perhaps not even the curators Jochem Hendricks, Keh Ng, Tina Hage, and Matthew Stock knew whether and what the pairings brought together in the H8H.space would have to say to one another.

And yet, even though Hendricks’ conceptual sound piece here and Demi Spriggs’ Exercise in Folklore there are connected by little more than their analog medium; even though it’s hard to reconcile Jagoda Bednarsky’s painting with Keh Ng’s Beast of Hackney Marshes; and even though Warren Garland initially appreciated Dirk Krecker’s collages primarily as a backdrop for his own video work — the concept largely works.

This is less a matter of form or preferences and more a result of the respective artistic attitudes, as is evident, for instance, in Karl England’s Variable and Thuy Tien Nguyen’s Platform. It also stems from the audacity with which, for example, Blue Curry sarcastically questions the identity discourse in art — paying homage in doing so to the bravado of one-time enfant terrible Georg Herold.

The initiated dialogues prove especially stimulating in their juxtaposition of younger and more established positions. More than five decades separate the minimalist “reliefs” of Charlotte Posenenske and the photography-based work of Tina Hage, born in 1976. And in the realm of art, that’s more than just half a lifetime — it’s a world apart.

Here, however, the artistic positions truly have something to say to each other. They are not simply talking past one another.

— Christoph Schütte“The Conversations” at H8H.space, Frankfurt, Hohenstaufenstraße 8. On view until May 16.

Conceived initially as a part of the London based collaborative event by the Mews Project Space 'Artists books Weekend' “What is an Art Book?” is an investigation in to the politics of artists books, its mode of production and its recent resurgence in the art world. For this our third volume The Modern Language Experiment is very excited to be collaborating with two New York spaces. Garis &amp; Hahn and Young &amp; Starving. An Art Book today can be seen to occupy various different positions including that of a piece of theory, a catalogue, a printed exhibition, a piece of art in itself, a supplement to a pre-existing piece. It can be a proposal for the future or an examination of the present or what has passed. “What is an Art Book?” will be an investigation of what an Art Book is in terms of material, conceptual, industrial and political concerns. For more information visit The Modern Language Experiment web site.<img width="1080" height="741" width_o="1080" height_o="741" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fb536b3be5ed9afdc64b65661bf75e72435048f4736d9ec66d9a2b8f4e7ce48b/what-is-art03_o.jpg" data-mid="108889253" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/fb536b3be5ed9afdc64b65661bf75e72435048f4736d9ec66d9a2b8f4e7ce48b/what-is-art03_o.jpg" />

BR: Tell me about Gestalt. What are the bare bones of the project and where did it begin?TH: My work starts with found images particularly those from newspapers and online media. I often look at journalistic images and have amassed a large collection of these, so I have become very aware of the various uprisings in different countries that have sprung up since the end of 2010.What interests me is that all the protesters from these diverse places appear to be people on the street as opposed to seasoned activists and are self-organised. However, the actions of the UK rioters cannot been seen in the same context as the protesters in Egypt for example.
There is clearly an unplanned movement of masses in a swarm like mentality which uses social media and networking to communicate. The result of this is an almost spontaneous physical presence on the street. The protesters are mostly anonymous; there is no confirmed leader and most of the time the faces we see in the media are completely covered. It is important to mention that this work is not about the subject of protest, but rather the formal language that these protesters start to create. Until recently, protests were usually pre-organised with defined leaders and political agendas. The language emerging from these new protests represent a different way in which masses now form. It is one of anonymity and viral chaos.

BR: What can we expect to see from the new work and what reaction do you anticipate from audiences to the show?TH: When you step into the gallery space, you are physically standing inside the work. The photographic installation is made of large format prints on panels, set up very closely next to each other. The other element of the show is a book, containing images in the exhibition and additional works from the series. It creates rhythm, movement and patterns by juxtaposing the images next to each other in the page layout. Both elements are important to the show because they broaden the context of the work. The show and the book are not a political statement about protesting, I am more interested in looking closely at the anonymous individual and how they emerge as part of a movement; their gestures, appearance and actions. I would like the audience to discover a visual language that lets in their own association towards the work. I did not want to produce work which can be put into a distinct category, I always feel that restricts ways of thinking and new associations. I am fascinated by these current movements across the globe and I would like to contribute to see the individual in other aspect besides the greater political movement they are part of.

Artists, writers, curators, designers and other practitioners are invited to respond to the title of the project by contributing their interpretation of what an Art book means to them and their practice. Each contributor can propose text, drawings, photographs, sculpture, performance, audio recordings, video or any other concept/theory as long as it can ultimately be realised in A4 paper format and in black and white.

ArticlesThe one that couldn’t get away

by Uma Karavadra
Her latest series, The One That Couldn’t Get Away, uses found images of games played in English public schools. Games include Pancake Greaze, which is played at Westminster School where a pancake is tossed in the air and students fight to grab the largest piece, and the Eton Wall game, which resembles Rugby Union.
The photographs emphasise the physicality and conflict of the games, yet there is a humour in the incongruity of boys in suits and ties wrestling for a pancake. Hage subverts the image by replacing the male bodies with her own and as a woman of mixed descent highlighting the power dynamics of the scene. These games have been played for hundreds of years and are part of the tradition and legacy of institutions which have produced a high proportion of Britain’s political elite. Hage is interested in what these traditions tell us about social relations and the values upheld by institutions like Eton, which has educated 19 British Prime Ministers and a number of members of the Royal family.Tina Hage’s photographs often depict bodies in close proximity, tangled in piles of limbs or jostling for space in a crowd. While these works were created before our current predicament, they recall a not too distant reality, where daily urban life meant being part of a mass of bodies.

Hage’s photographs combine the aesthetics of documentary photography with the making process of painting. She isolates a specific, meaningful moment and re-enacts it by photographing herself in each of the multiple roles and digitally composing it. The compositions draw our attention to the constructed nature of the scene, toying with the idea of supposedly candid photojournalistic images. The re-enactments are based on photojournalistic imagery either taken by Hage or found in a variety of media – often focusing on the social and political content of the imagery.

In 2009, Hage was in Beijing towards the end of the SARS outbreak. Whilst traveling on trains she noticed passengers wearing masks, something she was unaccustomed to seeing at the time. During rush hour people were often exhausted and sometimes appeared ill on the crammed trains. Hage would take photographs on these journeys that she later recreated for her Universal Pattern series, which explores the collective as represented in mass media. In Universal Pattern IV, the artist is shown in various states of exhaustion or sleep, wearing a mask or coughing into a tissue.

Mere months ago, the work could be read as depicting the universal discomforts of public transport. Today, it reflects the shared anxiety around sickness and the proximity of bodies, as well as our altered reality where the indignities of public transport are no longer a part of daily life for many. In Hage’s photographs, scenes are symbolic and the crowd functions as a reflection of society. If we look close enough there is a lot the mass can tell us about ourselves.

by Keh NgThe modern language experiment

“Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.”
Charlie Chaplin

When viewing the “Rehearsal” pieces, the viewer is reminded of a bygone era of silent films and theatre. Actions that appear
funny but somehow tragic are reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin’s quote “Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy
in long-shot.” Chaplin, a master of gesture himself was always aware of the power of the body’s language. That like in any
language, nuances are the key that can hold true meaning. The figures we see in the various configurations suggest a formal
relationship. It is unclear whether they are performing to entertain or for duty as while the poses are impressive, ridiculous
and impossible in equal measure, the expressions of the figures are sometimes pained, non-plussed but most often vacant
allowing the viewer to constantly re-assess what exactly these figures are rehearsing.

Übersetzung&nbsp;Text von Keh NgThe modern language experiment

“Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.”
Charlie Chaplin

by Tina Hage
The photo series titled Rehearsal draws on the physical comedy and visual storytelling of silent films, particularly the 1920s works of Buster Keaton. In this work, the layered composition and exaggerated body language of the two figures evoke a sense of slapstick humor.

The title Rehearsal refers to the preparation for an event that, in this case, will never happen—a moment of futility, akin to the myth of Sisyphus. The figures' poses emphasize this endeavor, where the goal becomes irrelevant. The repetitive actions, reminiscent of Keaton's carefully timed comedic routines, symbolise life's cyclical nature and the constant striving inherent in everyday tasks.

The reenacted poses, staged and photographed by myself, go beyond homage to silent film. They emphasise a contemporary context, offering a visual metaphor for the struggles of modern life. The figures, dressed in dark suits against a stark white backdrop, further heighten the sense of timelessness and universality. The simplicity of the setting strips away distractions, allowing the focus to remain on the movements, expressions, and tensions between the figures.

Through digital collages, the images reflect how modern existence is composed of repeated efforts, where the end goal often fades into irrelevance. This creates a playful connection between the physicality of early cinema and reflections on contemporary life.

	ArticleRed Carpet (2012)

by Tina HageThe series Red Carpet is inspired by imagery in the media documenting the arrival of an official states person at an airport. The gesture of laying down a red carpet is used here to mark the route taken by heads of state on formal occasions and expresses a special effort made by an nation showing their hospitality. While everything in this ceremonial event remains in its normal state; the Astroturf with the white and yellow lines on the ground – it is the formal gesture of laying down a red carpet for sometimes less then 10 meters that transforms the context and location here. The temporary set up of a particular moment is what strikes me and which relates very much to photography: there is only a chosen frame which is visible in a photograph, everything out side this frame does not exist and is open to your imagination. The work was first published in the magazine HESA inprint issue 20 in 2012.
